I recently watched a thought-provoking video by Steven Johnson that analyzes the process of “Where Good Ideas Come From” and how landmark ideas through history have gotten us to where we are today. We all want to be more innovative, creative and truly make a difference, within our organizations and society, and with his research, he identifies historical trends in how great ideas have come to life and the environments that have triggered those ideas. In more situations than not, the most important good ideas take years to mature and that “Aha” light bulb moment often finally comes to fruition as a result of a collision of “hunches.”
More than five years ago I had the concept of Liberti’s business model percolating in my mind, and after watching this video, this concept of the evolution and collision of crazy hunches resonates perfectly for where we are now with launching Liberti and how we’ve gotten to this point.
“The patterns are simple, but followed together, they make for a whole that is wiser than the sum of its parts. Go for a walk; cultivate hunches; write everything down, but keep your folders messy; embrace serendipity; make generative mistakes; let others build on your ideas; borrow, recycle; reinvent.” -Steven Johnson
As we get ready to launch our new campaign, I was reflecting on the fact that good ideas come from all of these important steps along the way. It’s crucial to let others build upon your ideas to give them life. I am so incredibly thankful for the amazing talent I work with every day and we are especially thankful for the creative gifts Megan, our product designer, has helped to concept for our latest collection, “Less than 1%.”
